About
the Artist
A native Californian, Vincent Richardson grew up between Los Angeles and Mexico City. He studied art both in the United States and Mexico, and remains very much influenced by such artists as Dr. ATL and Mexican muralist artists, Diego Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros.
Vincent's love for ancient cultures has led him to study and explore many aboriginal worlds from the Maya to the Kwakiutl and, lately, the Inuit. As well, his belief in a Universe infused with life, love, and meaning results in richly layered work that unites and juxtaposes organic and inorganic materials.
Vincent's art is tangible. In fact, the deeply textured quality of wood, metal, pumice, and pigment is so 'touchable', that at art shows he has a piece specifically designed to allow for touching!
Vincent travels and paints with his wife, novelist Faith Richardson. The teaming of Vincent's rich imagery and Faith's ability to spin a good story has birthed Fox Song Books, home to novels, juvenile fiction, and picture books many of which showcase Vincent's images.
About the Teacher
As an elementary bilingual educator and reading specialist, Vincent has worked with at-risk youth, English language
learners, and special needs students in a variety of educational settings. Vincent's passion for teaching is foundational in his belief that all children are capable of learning and of achieving academic excellence. Vincent considers art to be one of the best bridges that can assist in reaching students who have academic difficulties at school, with art acting as a catalyst for aiding students in their development of an unquenchable love of learning. Reading, art—and humor—are considered by Vincent as primary portals to engaging active imaginations and stimulating creativity.
"Life is a constant struggle between light and darkness, hope and despair, reality and illusion. I believe that the arts are interpretive tools used by humanity tocope with its vast needs, and to help establish a relationship with the Universe. Our interpretations, our choices, result in what we perceive as reality: truly, negativities such as disease, death, and decay are merely facts of life. We can choose to wallow in the mire of our troubles, or we can opt for a positiveperspective in life that leads us to hope for a better tomorrow . . . regardless of the pain . . . ..
What lives in the heart, is what is reflected in the art." VJR
